Motorcyclists operating boda boda businesses have been advised to exercise caution on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway during the festive season. This directive comes from the traffic police department, which aims to enhance road safety during a period of increased travel.
The traffic police department has raised concerns about riders using the wrong side of the road, overtaking carelessly, and weaving through heavy traffic. These dangerous practices are particularly alarming given the high volume of vehicles utilizing the highway during the holidays.
Traffic officers state that many accidents involving motorcyclists result directly from such careless behavior. They emphasize that adherence to traffic laws is crucial to prevent preventable tragedies on the roads.
Lari Base Commander Abraham Kiplagat reminded operators that their families and society value their lives and contributions. He urged them to be careful on the highway, especially with the significantly increased vehicle traffic, to help reduce the incidence of unnecessary accidents.
“You are valued by your families and society for your contributions. You must consider this every time you ride your motorcycle,” Kiplagat told riders during a sensitization meeting at Nyambari trading center.
Kiplagat, accompanied by other officers, also issued a stern warning against riding uninsured motorcycles, highlighting that it constitutes a serious traffic offense with legal consequences.
He further advised them: “Ensure you have a valid driving license, wear a helmet, and only carry one pillion passenger. Also, make use of a clean and visible reflective jacket for your safety and visibility.”
Kiplagat warned that anyone apprehended for committing a traffic offense would be promptly charged in court. This strict enforcement aims to deter violations and promote responsible road usage among boda boda operators.
Boda boda chairman Joseph Macharia assured the police that operators would observe traffic rules diligently. He also applauded the police for conducting an impromptu road safety campaign, recognizing its importance during the busy festive season.
Sub-county Police Commander Emily Ngaruiya stated that the government has implemented a comprehensive strategy to reduce both accidents and traffic congestion. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure smoother travel for all.
She added that they are undertaking joint operations with officers stationed along the busy highway. The goal is to ensure a free flow of traffic throughout the entire festive season, mitigating delays and frustrations for commuters.
“We aim to prevent traffic jams this season and ensure everyone reaches their destinations safely and efficiently,” she affirmed, underscoring the authorities’ commitment to public welfare.
