Airtel Africa has entered into a landmark agreement with SpaceX to deploy Starlink Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity across its 14 African markets, a move set to significantly expand mobile network access for more than 174 million customers, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
Under the partnership, Airtel Africa customers using compatible smartphones will be able to access mobile connectivity via Starlink satellites in areas where traditional terrestrial networks are unavailable.
The initiative positions Airtel Africa as the first mobile network operator on the continent to offer Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell service, leveraging a constellation of approximately 650 satellites to provide seamless coverage in hard-to-reach locations.
The satellite-to-mobile service is scheduled to launch in 2026, initially supporting text messaging and data for selected applications.
The agreement also encompasses Starlink’s upcoming broadband Direct-to-Cell system, which will utilize next-generation satellites capable of delivering up to 20 times faster data speeds, enabling high-speed connectivity directly to smartphones. The rollout will be implemented progressively, subject to regulatory approvals in individual countries.
The collaboration marks a major step in Airtel Africa’s efforts to bridge the digital divide by extending reliable mobile connectivity beyond the limits of existing ground infrastructure.
By complementing its terrestrial network with satellite technology, the company aims to ensure continuous and dependable service for customers living in remote and rural areas.
Airtel Africa Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sunil Taldar, said the partnership underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing customer experience through innovative connectivity solutions.
“Airtel Africa remains focused on delivering reliable and contiguous mobile services to our customers. Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell technology strengthens our network by reaching areas where deploying terrestrial infrastructure is challenging. We are excited about this collaboration, which sets a new benchmark for service availability across our 14 markets,” he said.
On her part, Starlink Vice President of Sales, Stephanie Bednarek, noted that the agreement would be transformative for connectivity across Africa.
“For the first time, people in remote parts of the continent will be able to stay connected where terrestrial coverage cannot reach. We are thrilled that Starlink Direct to Cell will power this life-changing service. Together with Airtel Africa, we will also introduce next-generation broadband technology to deliver high-speed connectivity and faster access to essential services,” she said.
Both Airtel Africa and SpaceX indicated that they will continue to explore additional areas of collaboration aimed at accelerating digital inclusion and expanding access to modern communication services across Africa.
