Tragic Loss Sparks Call for Spiritual Intervention and Action Against Illicit Brews in Ndumberi As Victim is Laid To Rest

Ndumberi village (Kiambu County) has recently seen a troubling rise in the sale and consumption of illicit brews, a problem local leaders say has cost several lives. Tensions and grief came to a head following the tragic murder of Joseph Gatonye, a young father whose untimely death by tabbing—allegedly at the hands of his lover—shocked the quiet village and highlighted the urgent need to address systemic issues affecting the community’s youth.

Gatonye’s Mother Susan Njeri( right) holding her Granddaughter in a sombre mood.

Grief and raw emotion engulfed Karambaini village as family, friends, and relatives gathered to pay their final respects and lay to rest Joseph Gatonye, a father of one who was tragically stabbed to death by his lover a week ago.

The emotional burial ceremony was witnessed by his young daughter and grandmother, Susan Njeri, who watched helplessly as Gatonye—remembered as a humble young man with a promising future—was lowered to his final resting place.

The solemn event turned into a platform for accountability as speaker after speaker strongly condemned the rise and widespread sale of illicit brews in the village, attributing the trade to a growing loss of life in the area.

Community leaders, including former area MCA Ranji Kamaguru, Thomas Mwangi (popularly known as Mashinani), and Kiambu Women Representative aspirant Teresiah Wangui aka Spinach, declared that the illicit brew crisis in Ndumberi had escalated to a level requiring intense spiritual intervention, urging the community to unite in prayer.

Addressing the congregation, Kamaguru called out intimidation tactics, specifically pointing to anonymous leaflets circulating in town that accused him of planning a protest to burn down local bars. He dismissed the leaflets as scare tactics by opponents of the anti-brew campaign, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to eradicating illegal alcohol from the area.

“I am not intimidated by those circulating these leaflets. My message remains plain and simple: illicit brews must be completely eliminated from Ndumberi,” Kamaguru stated.

Echoing his sentiments, Mashinani—who is contesting the Ndumberi MCA seat—noted that anti-brew crusaders were facing personal attacks and hostility. However, he maintained that leaders would not be cowed into abandoning their duty to protect the community.

“I urge our mothers to teach us how they pray so that we can collectively salvage this generation,” Mashinani appealed.

Adding to the call for social reform, Spinach highlighted the urgent need to safeguard the boy child, observing that current societal pressures and lifestyles leave young men increasingly vulnerable and neglected by society.

The late Gatonye was eulogised as a humble and outgoing man who liked keeping a low profile.
