TVET Institutions Turn Environmental Lessons Into Action

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across Kenya have turned their campuses and surrounding communities into centres of environmental action, joining the country’s Mazingira Education Institutions Day through tree growing and clean up exercises.

The nationwide activities held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, brought together students, trainers and staff in practical efforts aimed at promoting environmental conservation while reinforcing the role of TVET institutions in building sustainable communities.

Principal Secretary for TVETs Esther Muoria commended institutions that participated in the initiative, saying the exercises demonstrated how environmental responsibility can be translated from classroom lessons into practical action.

She said every tree planted and every public space cleaned represented a contribution towards a greener and more resilient Kenya.

The activities were conducted under the State Department for TVET’s environmental conservation campaign, “TVET for a Greener Kenya,” which seeks to link technical skills development with sustainable development and responsible environmental stewardship.

“Hands that build, hands that plant, hands that clean” emerged as a defining message of the initiative, highlighting the broader role of TVET graduates beyond technical workmanship.

The institutions were encouraged to use their skills and resources to support environmental restoration, cleaner communities and sustainable livelihoods.

Among the institutions taking part were The Kisumu National Polytechnic, Kenya Coast National Polytechnic, Gichugu Technical and Vocational College and Mathenge Technical Training Institute, among others.

The exercises included tree planting and clean up activities, with participants helping to restore green spaces and improve cleanliness within their institutions and surrounding areas.

The State Department for TVET said the initiative was intended to demonstrate that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility requiring participation from institutions, communities and individuals.

The tree growing component also aligns technical training institutions with the national emphasis on increasing tree cover and restoring degraded landscapes.

For TVET institutions, the environmental campaign provides an opportunity to incorporate sustainability into skills training while encouraging students to take practical responsibility for the communities in which they live and work.

The department said the participation of institutions across the country underscored the capacity of the TVET sector to contribute to national development beyond the production of skilled workers.

Through tree planting, clean up campaigns and other community based activities, the institutions are seeking to demonstrate how technical skills can be applied to some of the country’s pressing environmental challenges.

Muoria hailed the participating institutions for “digging in, cleaning up, planting forward and keeping Kenya growing”, urging continued commitment to environmental protection.

The Mazingira Education Institutions Day activities were also supported by stakeholders in the forestry and environmental sectors, including the State Department for Forestry and the Forestry Department.

The campaign comes at a time when environmental sustainability is increasingly being incorporated into national development planning, with institutions of learning expected to play a central role in creating awareness and encouraging practical conservation.

Beyond the immediate benefits of cleaner campuses and newly planted trees, the initiative seeks to nurture a generation of technically skilled Kenyans who understand the relationship between economic development, environmental protection and community wellbeing.

For Kenya’s TVET sector, the message was clear that skills development and environmental responsibility need not operate in separate spaces.

The same hands being trained to build infrastructure, operate machinery, repair equipment and support industries can also plant trees, clean communities and help protect the natural resources on which future generations will depend.

The October 6 activities therefore provided a practical demonstration of the State Department’s broader vision of “Skilled People, Productive Communities, a Prosperous Kenya”, with environmental conservation placed alongside technical skills as part of the country’s development agenda.
