The much awaited marathon at St Paul’s University aimed at raising funds for the needy students was held on Saturday.

The institution’s staff, students and partners participated in the marathon dubbed ‘Elimu Bora run 2026’.

It had a 5km, 10km and 15km race where participants traversed in Tigoni and Kabuku area as it was flagged off by SPU vice chancellor Prof Esther Mombo at the university’s main campus in Limuru sub county.

The region was covered by fog and mist in the morning and the participants had to be escorted by traffic and regular police led by Tigoni OCS Christine Mundanya so as to control vehicles passing that route.

Prof Mombo said the university aims at raising an endowment kitty to support the needy students who would want to further their education.

She also said the activity also brought together communities living near the institution as well as partners, where they exercise together.

“Even as we raise the endowment kitty to support the needy students in their academic life since they cannot afford, it is also a time of sharing with communities and partners and we get to know from each other” the VC said.

Deputy vice chancellor Prof Abraham Waithima said they plan to be holding the activity annually.

Some of the sponsors and partners who worked so hard to ensure the “Elimu Bora Run 2026” is a success include The Cooperative Bank of Kenya (Anchor Sponsor), The National Bank of Kenya (NBK), NCBA and Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (KEPRO).

Others are Matthew 28 Ministries, Inc and Coca-Cola, Lifecare Hospitals, St. Bridget Hospital, Ladnan Hospital and others.

A student James Njoroge applauded the SPU for coming up with the strategy saying it will reduce the number of bright students who may fail to further their education.

“This is a strategy that will help so many needy students acquire quality education. When you look at the issue from both sides of the coin, the needy person was supported will never forget and he or she is instilled supporting education value”, Njoroge said.
