Hundreds of young people in Kiambu County received a major boost in their digital empowerment journey after graduating from ICT Stage 1 training during a colourful certificate issuance ceremony held at the Ndumberi Jitume Digital Hub on Monday morning.

The event brought together government officials, diplomats, students and residents in a celebration of youth empowerment, digital literacy and international cooperation aimed at expanding access to technology and online opportunities.

Speaking during the ceremony, Kiambu Member of Parliament Machua Waithaka lauded the dedication shown by the graduates and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting digital transformation initiatives within the constituency.

A student receiving an ICT certificate from Kiambu Member of Parliament Machua Waithaka joined by Ambassador to Kenya Her Excellency Gentiana Serbu,

The ceremony was further highlighted by the visit of Gentiana Serbu, Ambassador of the Republic of Romania to Kenya, who donated computers to the Ndumberi Jitume ICT Hub and announced scholarship opportunities for local youth interested in advancing their studies and digital skills.

Waithaka said the donation would significantly strengthen ICT training programmes at the hub and help equip young people with practical technological skills needed in today’s rapidly evolving digital economy.

“These computers will play a critical role in enhancing digital literacy and expanding access to global opportunities for our youth. We are committed to ensuring that young people in Kiambu are empowered with relevant skills that can enable them compete favourably both locally and internationally,” he said.

The MP noted that investment in digital skills development remains a key pillar in addressing unemployment among the youth, adding that ICT hubs have become important centres for innovation, entrepreneurship and online job creation.

Ambassador Serbu praised the efforts being made to empower Kenyan youth through technology and education, saying partnerships between Kenya and Romania can help create meaningful opportunities for young people through skills development and academic exchange programmes.

She encouraged the graduates to take advantage of the available opportunities and continue advancing their ICT knowledge to position themselves for emerging careers in the digital space.

The event also marked a major milestone for students who successfully completed ICT Stage 1 training under the Jitume Digital Programme. Graduates expressed excitement after receiving their certificates, saying the training had equipped them with valuable computer and internet skills that would improve their employability and entrepreneurial potential.

Parents and residents who attended the ceremony welcomed the expansion of ICT programmes in the area, noting that access to affordable digital training has become increasingly important for young people seeking employment and self-reliance.

Among dignitaries present at the event were Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Titus Macharia, Konza Technopolis Director Mr. Peter Muchendu, local leaders, trainers, students and members of the community.

The Ndumberi Jitume ICT Hub is among several digital centres established across the country to promote digital inclusion and provide youth with access to ICT training, internet connectivity and online economic opportunities as Kenya continues advancing its digital transformation agenda.
