Phylis Kioi, an aspiring Kiambu Women Representative, has this afternoon launched an ambitious bursary empowerment plan. The initiative is aimed at assisting students who recently completed their KJSEA exams and are scheduled to join senior schools this coming Monday.

Kioi, a lawyer by profession, launched the program at the Ndumberi ICT Centre—a facility recently constructed by area MP Machua Waithaka to equip local youth with digital skills.

Through her foundation, Heart of the Nation, the aspirant seeks to promote the empowerment of children, women, and youth. Running on a Democratic Congress Party (DCP) ticket—currently headed by party leader Rigathi Gachagua—the lawyer distributed cheques worth Ksh 500,000 to beneficiaries across all 30 wards in Kiambu County.

The individual bursary amounts varied, with some students receiving Ksh 12,000, others Ksh 8,000, and some Ksh 5,000. These funds are intended to cover fees at the specific institutions where the students have been placed.

During the event, Kioi took issue with the placement of some students in far-flung counties, describing the move as discouraging.

”It is for this reason I support my party leader, Mr. Rigathi Gachagua, in his bold stance that county schools should prioritize students who hail from within those counties,” she stated.

She further called upon all leaders—including MCAs, MPs, and Governors—to release their bursary funds on time to ensure learning commences without delay.

One of her ardent supporters, Mr. Stanley Mugacha, hailed the initiative, noting that supporting the underprivileged demonstrates the kind of “mature leadership” the county needs.
