The National Construction Authority (NCA) has ordered an immediate suspension of all work at a residential development site in Westlands, Nairobi. This decision follows reports of structural failure received on Monday, December 15, 2025. In response, the Authority dispatched a quality assurance team to the location to conduct a compliance check and ensure public safety.

The affected project, situated along Peponi Road, was designed to include three basement levels and thirteen suspended floors. Upon confirming signs of structural distress, officials halted construction activities and cordoned off the site. The development was registered with the NCA in September 2024, listing Meraki Universal Building Limited as the primary contractor.

Key professionals associated with the project include Architect Peter Kamau Mwangi and Structural Engineer Samuel Maina Wairimu. To manage potential risks, the area has been placed under the control of the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) and the National Police Service. As a precautionary measure, occupants in neighboring properties have been advised to vacate temporarily.

A Multi-Sectoral Agencies Coordinating Committee (MSACC) has been constituted to assess the building’s stability. This team, which includes experts from the Engineers Board of Kenya and the Nairobi City County Government, is tasked with determining whether the structure can be salvaged or requires controlled demolition. The NCA has stated that no further activity will occur until investigations conclude.

The National Construction Authority operates under the mandate of the National Construction Authority Act of 2011 to regulate Kenya’s construction industry. The body is responsible for registering contractors, overseeing project compliance, and coordinating development to ensure quality and safety. Structural failures often trigger multi-agency reviews to prevent disasters and enforce building code adherence.
