Inspector General Douglas Kanja presided over the launch of the Basic Recruit Training Course on Tuesday. The ceremony took place at the National Police College’s Main Campus in Kiganjo. This initiation represents a significant development for the National Police Service (NPS) following an extended hiatus attributed to various legal challenges.
Senior officials welcomed the Inspector General upon his arrival at the institution. These included the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat, and the College Commandant, Munga Nyale. Mr. Kanja formally received the new cohort of trainees, acknowledging their success in navigating a competitive selection process to join the service.
During his address, Mr. Kanja outlined the constitutional mandate of the NPS. He reminded the recruits that the organization functions as a national security organ responsible for maintaining law and order. He noted that their enlistment serves as a testament to their potential and dedication to national service.
The Inspector General highlighted the significance of the police badge. He described it as a symbol of a solemn pledge to protect the public, often involving personal risk. He assured the group that the upcoming training would provide the essential skills and character traits required for professional duty execution.
Mr. Kanja stressed that policing extends beyond mere employment. He urged the recruits to participate in transforming the sector to meet public expectations. He stated that citizens merit a service that remains accountable and focused on people to ensure safety. He also emphasized the critical nature of discipline and teamwork throughout their careers.
The leadership also utilized the occasion to bid farewell to the outgoing Deputy Commandant, Esther Wangechi Mwangi. Ms. Mwangi is retiring after more than three decades of service, including 13 years stationed at the college. Officials recognized her for a career defined by integrity, professionalism, and selflessness.
Several high-ranking officers attended the function alongside the Inspector General. The delegation included representatives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Administration Police Service. Senior figures such as Director of Corporate Communications Muchiri Nyaga and incoming Deputy Commandant Donatha Kiplagat also observed the proceedings.
Kiganjo campus serves as the central training facility for recruits joining the Kenya Police Service wing. Recruitment cycles are periodically subject to judicial review to ensure compliance with constitutional requirements regarding transparency and fairness.
