Detectives from the Special Crime Unit presented Boniface Mulinge Muteti at the Milimani Law Courts today. Authorities charged the suspect with disseminating false information through his personal X account.

Prosecutors allege that on December 6, 2025, Muteti published a provocative statement under the username “Mulinge Muteti.” The post allegedly encouraged the public to seize property owned by politicians. The prosecution claims the suspect labeled politicians’ assets as stolen from the Kenyan people and urged citizens to arm themselves for an uprising.

Authorities assert that Muteti posted this content knowing it was false. They argue the intent was to incite public violence. These actions purportedly violate Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act No. 5 of 2018.

During the court session, Muteti entered a plea of not guilty to the charges filed against him. The court subsequently released him on a cash bail of Sh15,000.

A pretrial hearing for the case is set for December 30, 2025. Following the arraignment, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations issued a statement reminding citizens that online misinformation constitutes a criminal offense. They urged the public to exercise responsibility when using social media platforms.

The Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act of 2018 governs digital offenses in Kenya. Section 23 specifically addresses the publication of false information. Violations under this section can result in fines or imprisonment upon conviction. The Milimani Law Courts serve as a primary judicial venue in Nairobi for hearing such matters.
