The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has intensified its campaign in Mbeere North. The party is rallying behind its candidate, Leonard Muriuki Muthende.
Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki led the campaign team on Friday. He toured the Ngunyumu and Kune areas to drum up support.
Kindiki endorsed Muthende as the ideal successor to former MP Geoffrey Ruku. Ruku recently vacated the seat to become the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service.
The Deputy President emphasized the need for continuity. He stated that Muthende would carry on with road tarmacking and electricity projects. The candidate also pledged to manage water projects and bursary funds efficiently.
Political temperatures rose as leaders traded barbs. Kindiki criticized DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua for engaging in divisive politics. He accused Gachagua of sowing discord among the locals. Kindiki warned that residents must coexist peacefully after the election.
Muthende also responded to personal attacks. He criticized Gachagua for making disparaging remarks about his family and home. Muthende dismissed these comments as hate politics.
He asserted that family matters have no place in political banter. CS Ruku supported him, terming such attacks as cultural taboos among the Mbeere people.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire urged voters to reject the opposition. She advised the electorate to remain aligned with the ruling party.
Muthende promised to establish a new education fund if elected next Thursday. He faces competition from Newton Kariuki of the DP party and Duncan Mbui of the CCK party.
