George Gitau Urges Youth Voter Registration in Mt Kenya

Young people from the Mt Kenya region have been urged to register as voters with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) during the ongoing registration exercise.

Kikuyu Member of Parliament aspirant George Gitau said the region is respected because of its population. He added that it is expected to maintain the majority in voting patterns in each and every election.

Gitau warned that if young people fail to register with the IEBC, the voting pattern will differ from the population.

“People will realise that some of them did not take part in an election when the results are announced,” he said.

“Therefore, we are urging those who have not registered as voters and have identity cards to visit the IEBC centres to register. This is the only way the people will participate to elect all the leaders in all the positions we are expected to select,” he said.

He also appealed to parents with youthful children to ensure they have registered.

“Voting is a constitutional right. Even as we politicians speak about it, parents and relatives with young people should tell them the importance and how powerful it is when someone is registered as a voter,” he urged.

The accountant has declared interest in running for the Kikuyu MP seat. He added that he has been interacting with locals.

He will be competing for the seat with the area legislator, who is also the majority leader at the National Assembly, Kimani Ichung’wa.

Ichung’wa is a close ally of President William Ruto. Yet the accountant said he was confident that locals will elect him since they want a change.

Kinoo resident Simon Wachira said Ichung’wa has served the residents for three terms. He added that they need to feel the leadership of another person.

“We need to have a person who will listen to us, add value to what we do, and at the same time pull for developments,” he said.

Wachira noted that Gitau is an approachable politician who speaks about development all the time.

“Even if I’m not campaigning for somebody, Gitau will keep telling you of roads, schools, bridges, motivation, and so on. However, we shall listen to all those who will come,” he said.
