KIAMBU, KENYA—Residents and business owners in Kiambu town are raising alarm over a serious public health issue: persistently clogged sewer lines. The blocked drains are causing foul-smelling waste to spill onto the streets, raising fears of a potential outbreak of water-borne diseases.
Businesspeople, in particular, are bearing the brunt of the problem. They report that their repeated attempts to get help from county officials have been unsuccessful, leading some to consider a drastic measure—temporarily closing their businesses. The stagnant, unsanitary water not only creates an unpleasant environment but also poses a direct threat to the health of both customers and staff.
“Our efforts to reach county officials have been fruitless,” one business owner stated, “and others are now contemplating closing down their shops.”
The community is urging the county government to take immediate action to clear the blockages and address the underlying issues with the town’s drainage system before a major health crisis erupts.
