Kiambu Governor Wamatangi’s Projects Face Progress and Criticism

Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s administration has been actively promoting development projects in healthcare, infrastructure, and economic empowerment, as highlighted in recent social media updates. However, these efforts have drawn both praise and criticism from residents, reflecting a mixed response to the county’s progress as of late June 2025.

The construction of Kahawa Sukari Level 3 Hospital is underway, aimed at improving healthcare access in Kiambu. This follows earlier public concerns about inadequate medical services at facilities like Thika Level 5 Hospital, where residents have reported gaps in care delivery. Wamatangi’s administration has emphasized partnerships and data-driven approaches to enhance maternal and general healthcare, though some residents remain skeptical about the pace of improvements.

On infrastructure, the county is advancing a plan to elevate Thika town to city status, with the county assembly approving a proposal to develop Thika as an industrial smart city. If successful, this could bring significant funding for roads, drainage, and water systems. However, dissatisfaction persists over the condition of existing roads, such as Ruiru-Matangi-ini and Gwa Kairu-Murera, where potholes have reappeared despite recent repairs. Residents have raised concerns about the quality and maintenance of these projects, calling for greater accountability.

Economically, a pig farming program launched in October 2024 is gaining traction, with farmers reporting success in expanding their operations, including plans for sausage and bacon production. The initiative, paired with support for poultry, avocado, and maize farming, seeks to foster financial independence through training and market linkages. In areas like Githobokoni Ward, some residents have voiced support for these efforts, expressing confidence in Wamatangi’s leadership through 2032. However, others have questioned the distribution of resources and the program’s long-term impact.

Wamatangi’s tenure has not been without controversy. In April 2025, raids by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on county offices and the governor’s home led to the recovery of cash tied to alleged procurement irregularities. Wamatangi has dismissed these claims as politically motivated, urging residents to remain calm. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the management of Kiambu’s budget, with critics pointing to substandard roads and hospitals as evidence of mismanagement. As Kiambu navigates these developments, Wamatangi’s administration continues to push for progress while addressing public concerns.

The county’s efforts to improve healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities are met with cautious optimism, tempered by calls for transparency and better execution of projects.
