Former Kiambu Governor Dr. James Nyoro has officially announced his intention to contest the Kiambu gubernatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 General Elections.
Speaking to mourners in Cianda during a service to mourn Henry Waireri Karume—son of the late veteran politician and tycoon Njenga Karume at the Family’s Cianda home, —Dr. Nyoro explained that his political absence since the 2022 elections was intentional. He stated that he deliberately kept a low profile to afford the current county administration time and space to deliver on its mandate without political distraction.
Revisiting his leadership record, the former county chief highlighted key achievements during his tenure, particularly emphasizing his administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which county health facilities were fully upgraded and equipped. He further cited substantial progress made in fostering staff cohesion within the county public service and improving road infrastructure across all wards to make them motorable.
“The time has now come for the people of Kiambu to weigh our past accomplishments against the current state of affairs,” Nyoro stated.
Addressing pressing social issues, Dr. Nyoro sharply criticized the rising fatalities linked to the consumption of deadly illicit brews in the region. He raised strong concerns over the County Government’s liquor licensing procedures and called on law enforcement and relevant state bodies to conduct thorough investigations to unmask the suppliers of the toxic substances used in manufacturing the brews.
When asked about the political vehicle or party platform he intends to use for his 2027 bid, Dr. Nyoro urged his supporters to remain patient, reassuring them that a formal announcement regarding his party choice would be made in due course.
Dr. James Nyoro served as the Governor of Kiambu County from January 2020 to August 2022, taking over the helm following the impeachment of former Governor Ferdinand Waititu, under whom he had served as Deputy Governor.
An agricultural economist by profession, Nyoro’s tenure was largely defined by steering the county through the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and managing municipal governance challenges. In the August 2022 General Election, he lost the seat to the current Governor, Kimani Wamatangi. Since then, Nyoro has largely maintained a quiet presence away from active politics until his latest public declaration.
