The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has formally instructed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to open an inquiry into the death of Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, also known as Betty Bayo.

This directive follows a formal complaint received by the DPP on December 9, 2025, from legal representatives acting on behalf of the deceased’s immediate family.

The press statement, released on December 18, 2025, outlines specific issues raised by the family regarding the nature of the death.

According to the complaint, the family contends that the deceased had no known underlying health conditions prior to her passing.

Furthermore, the statement notes allegations that the family has been denied access to the post-mortem report, raising suspicions about the transparency of the process.

In response to these weighty concerns, the DPP has exercised powers conferred by Article 157 of the Constitution of Kenya.

The DCI has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation to uncover the facts surrounding the death.

Upon completion of the inquiry, the investigation file is to be submitted to the ODPP for independent review and determination of appropriate legal action.

The office reiterated its commitment to executing its mandate with independence, fairness, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
