The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a formal inquiry into the road accident that claimed the life of former Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo. The fatal collision occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, in the Karai area along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway. Authorities confirmed that the politician succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash, which involved his personal vehicle and a commercial bus.

According to preliminary police reports, the accident took place at approximately 02:19 A.M. It involved Hon. Jirongo’s vehicle, registration number KCZ 350C, and a public service vehicle owned by Climax Company Ltd. Investigators detailed that the collision was a head-on impact of significant force. The crash pushed Jirongo’s car roughly 25 meters from the point of impact, while the bus stopped 50 meters away.

A team comprising homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory has processed the scene. As part of the initial evidence gathering, officers secured CCTV footage from the nearby Eagol Petrol Station. This footage has provided investigators with a precise timeline of the former legislator’s movements immediately prior to the incident.

The recorded video shows Jirongo driving into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction at 02:18:40 A.M. However, he did not purchase fuel. Instead, he stopped at the exit at 02:19:10 A.M. shortly before making a right turn to head back towards Nairobi. The footage captures the moment the bus collided with his vehicle just seconds later, at 02:19:25 A.M.

Police have since interrogated the driver of the bus, identified as Tyrus Kamau Gathinji. Gathinji had previously recorded a statement at the Narasha Traffic Base. He has been released on cash bail while investigations continue into the alleged offense of causing death by dangerous driving. Authorities have ordered him to report back to the traffic base on December 22, 2025.

In addition to the driver, detectives have interviewed other individuals present at the scene. Statements have been recorded from the petrol station’s night guard and the fuel attendant on duty during the fateful night. These accounts are being used to corroborate the events captured on the surveillance footage.

Investigators are also reconstructing Hon. Jirongo’s timeline leading up to the accident. Detectives are currently examining his activities earlier that evening, specifically a meeting held at the Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi. Officers are recording statements from individuals who interacted with him at that location to establish a comprehensive chronology.

The probe is ongoing, with forensic teams scheduled to revisit the crash site for further technical analysis. The DCI has indicated that additional statements will be recorded from passengers who were aboard the Climax Company Ltd bus. Once the investigation is concluded, a detailed file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review.

Cyrus Jirongo was a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, best known for his leadership of the Youth for KANU ’92 (YK’92) lobby group in the early 1990s. He served as the Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency and held the position of Minister for Rural Development under the Moi administration. His career spanned several decades, during which he remained an influential, albeit sometimes controversial, player in national governance.
