A sombre mood continues to engulf Ting’ang’a village in Kiambu Sub-county following a grisly accident on Saturday morning near Kiuu River along the Ndumberi-Githunguri road. The crash claimed the lives of a bodaboda couple.

The accident involved a motorbike and a Volkswagen Polo vehicle. The couple, who were on the motorbike with their one-year-old child, were traveling towards Githunguri when the head-on collision occurred.

The Volkswagen set on fire by angry Bodaboda operators, Shell that remained after it was burnt down.

Tragically, the couple died, but the child survived and is currently recuperating at the Kiambu Level Five Hospital. Angry bodaboda operators, in response to the incident, torched the Volkswagen vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle managed to escape the wrath of the irate residents before later surrendering to the Kiambu Police station.
According to eyewitness accounts, the driver of the Volkswagen swerved into the path of the oncoming motorbike, causing the fatal head-on collision.

Residents are now calling on the government, through the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), to immediately erect speed bumps in the area, citing that accidents are happening almost daily.

“We are just perplexed by the high rate of accidents in this area, and we are now demanding, not asking for, the immediate erection of bumps here,” quipped Vincent Thuo, a local leader.

The residents, primarily women, further stated that they live in fear for their school-going children, noting there are no slowing signs in the area. They stressed that the issue is causing them sleepless nights and must be addressed urgently.

Fire engines from the Kiambu County Government spent the better part of the day clearing the debris left over after the accident, causing a snarl-up along the busy road.
